Wa Municipal hospital orders 19 staff to refund illegally earned funds following investigation

Management of the Wa Municipal Hospital has directed 19 staff members to refund various sums of money believed to have been improperly obtained from clients. This decision follows an investigation by a six-member disciplinary committee, which found the employees guilty of indiscriminate sales of non-drug medical consumables, making unauthorized demands, and collecting illicit fees, particularly at the maternity ward.

The refunds, which range from GH¢4 to GH¢286, are part of broader punitive measures imposed on the staff. These actions come after several complaints of misconduct, including extortion and insubordination.

Sampson Abu, the hospital administrator, confirmed the issue on Channel One TV, explaining that the investigation was prompted by public criticism of the staff’s behavior. Allegations included the unauthorized sale of items such as surgical gloves, urinary catheters, urine bags, pads, and bed mats to expectant mothers.

In addition to the refunds, some staff members will face changes in their work schedules or locations as further disciplinary actions. Mr. Abu emphasized that these measures adhere to the Ghana Health Service’s code of conduct and disciplinary procedures, aiming to uphold the integrity of the hospital and serve as a deterrent.

The hospital management has urged the public to maintain their trust in the facility and continue reporting any issues for prompt redress. As of the latest update, the affected midwives had not yet provided their responses to the allegations.
