Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, a renowned cellular pathologist and lifestyle wellness consultant, has expressed deep concern over the rising rates of hypertension and diabetes in Ghana, highlighting the serious threat they pose to public health.
He pointed out the alarming trend of many people consuming high-calorie energy drinks. Specifically, he noted that trotro and long-haul drivers are particularly at risk. “What is happening in Ghana, especially among these drivers, is very concerning. If we don’t address it, the widespread consumption of high-calorie energy drinks will lead to serious health issues,” he stated.
“These energy drinks contain seven calories per serving, offering a high caloric density with no nutritional value—just dense sugar and caffeine. Trotro and long-haul drivers commonly consume these drinks, often starting their day with a six-pack,” Professor Akosa explained.
He warned, “By consuming so many calories, individuals significantly increase their risk of developing diabetes. Currently, we have a diabetes prevalence rate of 10%, but there are many more who are pre-diabetic and on the verge of a diagnosis. The number of pre-diabetics is twice the current rate of diagnosed diabetics.”
He further emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “We are allowing these dreadful diseases to proliferate. Hypertension, often called the silent killer, affects one in two adult men over the age of 50.”
