KATH Oncologists withdraw services due to malfunctioning radiotherapy machine

Doctors at the Oncology Department of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital abandoned the Consulting Room on Monday, June 24, due to a fault in the radiotherapy machine that has persisted since October 2023. The Water Phantom unit, a critical component used for measuring radiation doses, has been malfunctioning.

“This component is essential for the radiation process,” an aggrieved doctor, who wished to remain anonymous, told 3news.com.

At the Outpatient Department for Oncology, over a dozen patients awaited treatment. “Only the Head of Department and one clinician are currently attending to the patients; the other doctors are not working,” a nurse at the Oncology Department informed Evans-Nkum.

In a phone conversation with the CEO of KATH shortly before he entered a board meeting, Prof. Addai-Mensah stated, “A letter of credit has been raised to address the issue. We have discussed this with the doctors, and we hope they understand the situation.”
