Dr. Vishnu Nene Limon Abayateye, a member of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), has petitioned the National Executive Council, calling for the removal of the Association’s President, Dr. Frank Serebuor.
In the petition, dated October 8, Dr. Abayateye accused Dr. Serebuor of violating Articles 16 and 23(3) of the GMA constitution.
He stated, “I write to inform you of my intention to move a motion for the removal of Dr. Frank Serebuor as President of the Association at the upcoming Annual General Assembly meeting in Ho, in accordance with Article 23 of the GMA constitution.”
Dr. Abayateye outlined the charges, including that Dr. Serebuor had unilaterally issued a statement, without consulting the National Executive Council or General Assembly, announcing the GMA’s decision not to participate in organized labour’s strike against illegal mining and its detrimental effects on health and the environment.
He argued this action directly contravenes Article 16 of the GMA constitution.
Furthermore, Dr. Abayateye stated that Dr. Serebuor’s actions had tarnished the Association’s reputation, making it appear inconsistent to the public, especially given its prior stance on illegal mining.
He assured that the necessary two-thirds majority of the General Assembly required to pass the motion would be gathered.
Dr. Abayateye also urged the inclusion of this motion in the agenda for the Annual General Meeting in Ho, from November 3 to 10, 2024, and requested that the matter be brought to the attention of Dr. Serebuor and the wider GMA membership.
