The management of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi has urgently requested additional dialysis machines to address the growing demand for kidney treatment. This need has intensified following a recent government policy that has increased the number of patients eligible for subsidized dialysis sessions.
KATH, a key medical facility serving over 12 regions and known for its advanced care, has experienced a surge in dialysis patients. The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) policy, which subsidizes renal treatments, has significantly contributed to this rise.
Professor Otchere Addai-Mensah, the Chief Executive Officer of KATH, expressed concerns during a press briefing, noting that the hospital’s current resources are inadequate. Although efforts are underway to purchase six new dialysis machines from internally generated funds, Professor Addai-Mensah emphasized the need for a total of 25 machines to fully equip the refurbished dialysis center.
“The urgent requirement for more dialysis machines is driven by the increased patient load due to the government’s new policy, which offers free sessions to certain age groups,” he said.
