Patients scheduled for elective surgeries at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s surgical unit can breathe a sigh of relief as the hospital announces the resumption of these procedures starting Tuesday, September 3. This follows the successful repair of one of the faulty lifts at the unit.
In an interview with 3news, the hospital’s management highlighted their plans to replace all outdated lifts with new ones, addressing the recurring issues with the facility’s elevators. Previously, elective surgeries had been suspended to prioritize emergency cases due to the lift breakdown.
The suspension affected nearly 100 patients who were awaiting their elective surgeries. The public had expressed concern over the ongoing elevator issues at the hospital.
PRO Mustapha Salifu confirmed that all specialists and patients have been informed about the lift’s repair. “The lifts are now functional, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of our patients. We are dedicated to delivering top-quality healthcare services,” he stated.
Regarding future improvements, Salifu mentioned that procurement for new lifts is underway, with installation expected within six months. “By the first quarter of next year, most of the outdated lifts will be replaced. We recognize the significant impact on surgical services and emergency care,” he added.
The hospital also addressed an incident involving Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the ranking member on the Health Committee of Parliament, who attempted an unannounced inspection of the elevator. The hospital emphasized the need for proper notification from high-profile visitors to ensure adherence to protocols and smooth operational procedures.
