The Ministry of Health has requested a six-month extension to recover approximately 100,000 cedis from 19 employees who defaulted on rent payments in 2022. These employees were provided with official accommodation at Korle Bu and Asylum Down Flats but failed to pay their rent.
The Ministry has attributed the defaults to an administrative oversight, specifically the failure of the Financial Controller of the Ministry of Finance to submit the necessary input forms. So far, only 11,000 cedis of the total outstanding amount has been recovered.
Emma Ofori Agyemang, the Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation at the Ministry, addressed the issue during a recent committee meeting. She assured the committee that measures have been implemented to recover the outstanding payments by deducting the rent directly from the employees’ salaries.
“We are still in the process,” Mrs. Agyemang explained. “Because we have put a system in place that going forward the rent will be deducted, we have a draft payment plan for them to recover the remaining amount beyond the 11,000 that has been settled.”
She expressed confidence in the plan, stating, “Honourable please, it won’t go more than six months.” The Ministry’s request for an extension reflects its commitment to resolving the issue promptly and ensuring that all outstanding debts are settled within the proposed timeframe.
