In 2023, there were 17,774 new HIV infections reported in the country, marking a 14.8% decrease in infections over the past decade.
In the same year, 12,480 individuals living with HIV died, with 11.2% of these being children. The regions with the highest prevalence remain Bono, Greater Accra, and Eastern Region.
During the dissemination of the 2023 National and Sub-National HIV Estimates and Projections in Accra, Dr. Kyeremeh, Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, expressed concern about the high number of infections among individuals aged 15 to 49, who are economically active.
According to estimates, fifty people are infected every day, and over 218,000 people living with HIV are unaware of their status. Currently, more than 152,000 people are on antiretroviral therapy (ART), including 36,000 male adults, 109,000 female adults, and 5,000 children.
Additionally, over 87,000 individuals on ART achieved viral suppression in 2023. The Commission and its partners aim to achieve an HIV epidemic-free country by 2030.
