Know about your vaginal discharge and what it means

Gynaecologist and Obstetrician Specialist, Dr. Promise Sefogah, has advised women to seek medical attention when they notice any abnormal discharge from their vagina.

In a discussion on the topic Vaginal Discharge on Health with Patricia, the Medical Director of Shape Healthcare Specialist Medical Centre mentioned that changes in the colour, consistency, or smell of vaginal discharge could be indicative of an infection or other underlying health issues.

“Vaginal discharge is a normal and common occurrence in women. The amount, colour, and consistency of discharge can vary throughout the menstrual cycle and can be influenced by factors such as hormonal changes, sexual arousal, and overall health. It is important to note that the characteristics of normal vaginal discharge can vary among individuals.”.

Normal vaginal discharge is typically clear or milky white and may have a mild, musky odour. It serves several important functions, including keeping the vagina clean, maintaining a healthy pH balance, and helping to prevent infections. If your discharge is white but seems thicker than usual or causes itching, it may be a yeast infection.

Yellow, grey, or green discharge may suggest a bacterial or sexually transmitted infection (STI).

Brown or red: Brown or red discharge is usually related to irregular menstruation or pregnancy (implantation bleeding). If you have brown or red-tinged discharge and it’s not your period, it may indicate a problem.
